“A Truly Bright Future”

How Bad will it get 2016? 1:13:16

New Year’s:  A holiday for those who have hope for a better tomorrow, hope for a promising year, hope for a bright future.  New Year’s is a holiday for people who feel a sense of control over their lives, people who feel power to make the changes they desire.

But maybe, just maybe ~ if we are being honest with each other ~ you are not feeling any of these necessary components to the traditional “Happy New Year”.

Maybe, just maybe ~ if we are being honest with each other ~ I am not alone, as I stand looking out across the horizon of 2016, feeling only fear, dread, and even  trepidation.  Maybe you also find yourself wondering “How bad will it get?”, “How much pain will I be asked to carry?”, “How heavy will the weights on my heart become?”, “Will I be able to physically bear what life throws at me, or will this be the year I literally crumble?”  as you look ahead to the coming year.

Oh, now, I’ve been a pastor’s wife long enough to “know all the right answers”.  I probably even know what you’re thinking as you read this.  Some of you are probably thinking thoughts of “Fear is not of God!” or “My, she’s quite the ‘Debbie Downer’, isn’t she?!”  But for the rest of you… to those of you who are thinking “Wow, that’s totally me…” and “I’m so glad I’m not the only one.”  To you, I offer no “Magic 10 step plan for a prosperous year”.  For truthfully, only God knows what the future holds for any of us.  What I am here to offer you, is the beautiful truths of what He has promised that is definitely in store for our futures.

Revelation 21:3-5, KJV  “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes;  and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.  And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.  And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.”

None of us can truly say what 2016 holds.  But thanks to the true and faithful words penned by John, we know the bright future that is in store for those who love God.

The fear, dread, and trepidation come when we set our sights on this earthly, immediate future.

Look up!  Keep your eyes focused on your eternal future.

Hold your head high, and walk boldly into 2016, knowing that every day lived brings us one day closer to this glorious future, promised to those who are part of the bride of Christ, awaiting the Bridegroom’s return.
