Texting Lingo

Recently, I was scrolling through my Facebook wall and came across an article (http://techland.time.com/2012/05/03/92-teen-text-terms-decoded-for-confused-parents/) that gave parents the edge on teenage texting slang. I was amazed at some of the combinations used to make complete thoughts. See if you can figure out the terms below:

  1. BRB
  2. AFK
  3. BFN
  4. FWB
  5. FYEO
  6. NAGI
  7. PAW
  8. OMG
  9. ZOMG
  10. SWYP

While my husband and I served many years in youth ministry, I can tell you many of these were new to me.   I found myself thinking how I really need to be wiser when it comes to texting, slang, and tweets if I am going to stay in tune with my children as they get older.  I was happy when I found an app that could translate text lingo into something I could understand.

Deep down, don’t we all want to be wise? I want to be discerning, strategic and careful about the decisions I make when it comes to what affects my family. In a way, as a mom, I feel it’s my responsibility to stay with the times, to be up-to-date with what my children are facing.

I am told in I Corinthians 3:18-19 “Don’t fool yourself. Don’t think that you can be wise merely by being up-to-date with the times. Be God’s fool—that’s the path to true wisdom. What the world calls smart, God calls stupid.”

I could spend hours searching text lingo and trying to find out the smart way to text (ironically on my smartphone!) I could study acronyms and quick lingo to understand what my teen is texting but that won’t really help me understand her better. I could just sit down and listen as she talks…listen to what she has to say. I could stop “preaching” my lessons and start hearing with my heart what life lessons she is picking up on through others.   It’s not hard to see which option will allow me to speak true wisdom into her heart at the right time.

It’s pretty clear to me when I take a step back….wisdom doesn’t come in studying things of this world. Wisdom is knowing God better, so we can make better decisions for our families.

That’s how I can stay in touch with them…by staying in touch with the God who knows them.. He will clue me in to the lingo I need in order to be up-to-date.

So are you wondering what the answers are to the text lingo above? Here they are…..study them, then send your teen a text today and surprise the socks off him/her with a little up-to-date lingo!
