Connecting to the True Vine

Spiritual Exhaustion Slider

John 15:4-5 “Abide in Me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.  I am the vine, you are the branches;  he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

I think it’s a battle women always seem to face.  Culture seems to scream that we need to perform.  Our ministry work can also scream, “Bigger programs!  Better attendance!   We gauge how successful our kingdom work is by earthly standards.

I love how John reminds us that nothing…absolutely nothing can happen apart from Him.  And I think most of us would agree that the kingdom work we are doing everyday includes Christ, even makes him the topic of all our mission statements and ministry goals.  John isn’t just talking about casting vision or growing people…he’s talking about a more subtle connection.  One between you and Him.

True vine.  Life comes out of being connected to the true vine.  That would indicate that there are false vines.  I wonder sometimes what I am clinging to…fake vines that promise life (like doing more, getting approval of others, pleasing others, being the model wife/mom) or the true vine which says I need to do nothing…only stay connected.

How are we to connect?  Well, we are all uniquely different and I would like to suggest that God has made each of us to need to connect with Him differently.

If you attended “A Day to Breathe” you will find this familiar.
Click here for an assessment that will help you figure out how God has made you to uniquely connect with Him.  It shouldn’t take you long….maybe 10 minutes.  After taking it, you will fall into one or two of the following categories:

  1. Relational
  2. Intellectual
  3. Worship
  4. Activist
  5. Contemplative
  6. Serving
  7. Creation

Have more questions or want to figure this out?  Come to one of our small group gatherings…the next one is February 29th at Coffee, Beans & Brew at 7041 Yankee Rd. Liberty Township.  We will be there at 7:00!

Next week we will look at how to fill that empty bucket in a tangible way.
