I Cringe Inside…

What a title, eh?  I pondered for days wondering what to name this blog post.  I changed it about 10 times. Okay, you’re thinking…what’s she talking about?  I often see Christ followers post on social media, “God is good” & to be honest with you, it sometimes makes me cringe. Not because I disagree with the statement.  Of course God is good! And I don’t cringe because someone is praising & giving the glory to God.  I’m beyond thrilled that they’re acknowledging our Savior.  You want to know why I cringe? Here’s why:

“I got a raise at work today.  God is good.”

“We just purchased a new house.  God is good.”

“I got a good report from my blood test.  God is good.”

“Going to vacation with my family.  God is good.”

I shudder because it only seems that those words are said only when things are most pleasant in life. Now hear me when I say this:  There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with any of these statements that I mentioned above.  However, there is something wrong when we only give God praise & glory when things are mighty fine pie in the sky by & by.  Let’s get real because life here on earth is NOT always great.  It’s just as important, if not more important, for us to acknowledge God’s goodness during the most difficult days & seasons in our lives. If we’re honest with ourselves, how often do we post things like:

“My son was just diagnosed with autism. God is good.”

“I have to have surgery to remove some pre-cancerous cells. I’m really scared. God is good.”

“I just lost a grandparent. God is good.”

“Looks like we’re not going to get that bonus. Money is tight. God is good.”

I don’t ever remember anyone ending a post reporting disappointing or bad news with “God is good.”  Why not?  Why not praise & give God glory when things are rotten?  Listen, He deserves our praise & thanksgiving in ALL things good & bad. If we only praise & say He’s good when life seems awesome, we are missing the mark. We may start to doubt His goodness when life is challenging & circumstances seem hopeless.  Paul wrote, saying, “Always be joyful.  Never stop praying.  Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

You can shout or scream, “God is good” anytime; not because you got that raise you wanted, not because you bought a new boat, not because your kid made the team, and not because you have a family that loves you.  Even if none of those things were true, God would STILL be good. Because God is love, merciful, compassionate, forgiving, constant, never-changing, always present & He sent His only beautiful & perfect Son to die for the world.  For you.  For me. For everyone.
Yes, God is so good.  But He is good today & every day in & through ALL things.
