Idols of the Heart: Learning to Long for God Alone Breathe Ministry

“Idols of the Heart: Learning to Long for God Alone”, Elyse M. Fitzpatrick

“What is it in your life that you think you have to have in order for life to continue to be worth living?”

In her book, “Idols of the Heart: Learning to Long for God Alone”, Elyse M. Fitzpatrick challenges us to consider that question.  I was gifted this book by a dear ministry woman whom I greatly respect and admire.  Little did I know how much it would challenge my own heart and mind.  We often think of the idols in the Bible as merely objects made by human hands in order to worship.  But in this book, we are challenged to especially consider the first commandment.

Exodus 20:3  You shall have NO other gods before me.

She points out that when we struggle with habitual sin, it is often due to the idols in our hearts. IT is also because we create God in our own image and find our joy and satisfaction in anyone or anything other than Him.  Using Biblical characters, she helps us see how idolatry was at the root of their poor decisions.  Firstly, I appreciate the practical aspects of the book that help the reader identify his/her own idols of the heart.  Secondly I appreciate the practical direction on how to turn from them by God’s grace and wholeheartedly love and long for Jesus. Jesus is the only one who can truly satisfy our longings and meet our every need.

I am thankful that this book was given to me at a time in my life when I really needed it.  Even as ministry women, there are so many things that compete for preeminence in our hearts and minds.  Our desires, our children, even our ministry itself.  But what do we really need in order to make life worth living?  I trust this book is as great a challenge and encouragement to you as it was to me!
