I could sit here all day and tell you my thoughts and ideas for how to create a thankful heart and model it to others. In choosing the Scripture that would be the key passage for today’s post, I came across this gem and well…I kind of feel like it speaks for itself.
So, I’m zipping my lip and posting Psalm 138 for you to read and be blessed by. I’ve posted it in the New American Standard first and then The Message. I can add nothing more to David’s words that would show how to model a thankful heart….he pretty much shows us here! I did BOLD any phrases that stood out to me of ways he stays focused on thankfulness.
Psalm 138 (NAS)
I will give You thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the gods.
I will bow down toward Your holy temple
And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your [a]truth;
For You have magnified Your [b]word [c]according to all Your name.
On the day I called, You answered me;
You made me bold with strength in my soul.
All the kings of the earth will give thanks to You, O Lord,
When they have heard the words of Your mouth.
And they will sing of the ways of the Lord,
For great is the glory of the Lord.
For though the Lord is exalted,
Yet He regards the lowly,
But the haughty He knows from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.
Psalm 138 (MSG)
1-3 Thank you! Everything in me says “Thank you!”
Angels listen as I sing my thanks.
I kneel in worship facing your holy temple
and say it again: “Thank you!”
Thank you for your love,
thank you for your faithfulness;
Most holy is your name,
most holy is your Word.
The moment I called out, you stepped in;
you made my life large with strength.
When they hear what you have to say, God,
all earth’s kings will say “Thank you.”
They’ll sing of what you’ve done:
“How great the glory of God!”
And here’s why: God, high above, sees far below;
no matter the distance, he knows everything about us.
When I walk into the thick of trouble,
keep me alive in the angry turmoil.
With one hand
strike my foes,
With your other hand
Finish what you started in me, God.
Your love is eternal—don’t quit on me now.
We can be thankful no matter the circumstances. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim….in the light of His glory and grace!
Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day with family and friends!
